Passing the Twenty-Sixth Amendment was an example of a huge change brought on by the Vietnam War and its protests. The amendment changed the legal voting age from twenty-one to eighteen. Prior to the amendment young men who weren’t able to vote were being drafted into a war in which they didn’t want to fight, but they had no way to vote against such things. This is a very significant turning point because we were finally admitting that something was flawed and took drastic steps to improve them. Few things are bigger than a constitutional amendment.
This was a huge win for young people and it helped strengthen the young people of America and help them face new and difficult problems. The Twenty-Sixth Amendment was a way for the young people of the 1960’s to feel like their country cared about them, because they were getting to do something no one else had done. This was one of the first major steps in youth empowerment during the 1960’s. Their empowerment might have helped spark the major uprising against the Vietnam War later that decade.
